Screw clamp for ricasso
|
If you already have met some troubles to make a
clean and symmetrical junction blade/ricasso with the file, here is the
tool that you need! It facilitates also the centering of the
edge compared to the ricasso.
Principle
First of all, here what this device looks like:

And the same one with a knife during work:

The ricasso is initially made flat and its two faces parallel,
then tight in the screw clamp like above. Then, you just need a file to
create the edge. The smooth edge of the
file takes support on the edge of this screw clamp, thus guaranteeing
the straightness and symmetry!
Supplies and tools
This gadget comprises the following elements:
- Two steel flat parts of approximately 25x6 over a length of
100. Ideally, this steel being used as zone of support (with friction), it will
have to be very hard. Here, I have taken XC120.
- Two bolts of 6.
Get some basic tools for metalworking (saw, drilling machine, files).
Realization
![](images/ricasso03.jpg)
(1) Cut out the two pieces of steel in the flat part.
(2) Drill holes of diameter 6 with regular intervals.
(3) Trace the reference marks on the profiles not used.
Two lines made with angle grinder make possible to align the 2 parts correctly.
(4) Plane and sandpaper the faces of support.
(5) Harden the faces of support on approximately 5mm. Make the tempering.
(6) Polish the faces of support. It is finished! ! !

The smooth side of the file take support on the tool to create the edge and the ricasso.
And the result on the finished knife:
